UEA Village

The original campus was established in 1963 when Sir Frank Thistlethwaite was Vice Chancellor. This village was the home of the growing university for its first few years while the main campus was being developed from the designs of Philip Lumsden.  For a few years, the village was the home for the School of Development Studies from 1973.

I think it must have been nearing the end of term [Summer Term 1983] and we knew DEV was moving to the main campus so I was taking a few photos as a reminder of our time in the Village.

Looking towards the main entrance double doors which led to the student Common Room, which contained all the student post pigeon holes. Suzanne Boeke-Motzkeit is in the background.
A wonderful sunny summer’s day and Suzanne Boeke-Motzkeit is sitting on the grass in the foreground. Two unidentified students are in the background.
View of the village campus looking towards some of the offices.
It’s Friday and three people from DEV 2 are digging the pit for the hog roast for the legendary annual DEV BBQ the next day.
Views of the area around the BBQ site – you can just see the River Yare in the background.

On the way to the village passing Earlham Hall (School of Law) on the main campus.
In the Village outside some of the lecture rooms looking up the slope (eastwards?) over the campus.
General view of the Village campus
View across the campus from the raised walkway that ran along the outside of the Common Room (?)
From the car park looking towards the Soil Labs (part of the student Common Room is just visible in the background on the far left).
